“In this world, it’s kill or be killed. There is no room for sentimentality.”
The Metro series, based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels, has received widespread acclaim from critics and survival horror/post-apocalyptic fans since the release of Metro 2033 in 2010. It was followed by Metro: Last Light in 2013 and Metro Exodus in 2019. These games are known for their claustrophobic atmosphere, tense resource management, and bleak, irradiated worlds.
Now, fans of the series find themselves patiently waiting for the next mainline entry. Although the developers, 4A Games, have confirmed that a new instalment is in development, they’ve also stated that it will only arrive “when it’s ready.” This careful approach is understandable, especially after the success of Metro Exodus, which sold over 10 million copies in five years. But the question on everyone’s mind remains: will we see this new Metro game before the actual year 2033?
4A Games has always been a developer that takes its time. Each Metro game has been meticulously crafted, and the studio is committed to delivering an experience that feels polished and true to the series’ roots. In a scenario where many games are released feeling rushed and unfinished, this approach is refreshing. Metro Exodus represented a significant departure from the cramped, tunnel-based environments of its predecessors, offering a more open-world experience while retaining the core elements of survival horror. The move paid off, but it also signalled that 4A is willing to take risks and experiment with the series.
This level of care means that the next instalment will take a while. The developers haven’t dropped many details about the sequel, beyond confirming that it’s in development. They’ve been clear that it will arrive when it’s fully finished, not a moment sooner.
In early 2024, 4A Games and Vertigo Games announced Metro Awakening, a VR spin-off set in the same universe but following a new character, Serdar. This left many Metro fans – those without VR setups – feeling left out. The VR format might lend itself well to jump scares and a more immersive experience, but for those used to the intense narrative and gameplay of the main series, Awakening feels like a side dish rather than the main course.
The teaser image for the new mainline game showed little beyond a vague “202X” release date. It’s assuredly probable that we’ll see the game before the actual year 2033, but with 4A’s dedication to quality, no one should expect a rushed release.
In today’s industry, there’s often pressure for studios to churn out games quickly, but the Metro series has thrived by not falling into that trap. With each title, 4A has improved and expanded on its formula. Rushed development could damage the reputation the series has built over the years. It’s better for them to take the time they need to make sure the game delivers on both the atmospheric horror and the narrative depth that Metro fans have come to expect.
Additionally, with the growing interest in ray-tracing, immersive environments, and next-gen capabilities, the next Metro game could end up being a technological showcase, much like Metro Exodus was with its Enhanced Edition.
One of the big unknowns surrounding the next game is whether Artyom, the protagonist of the previous entries, will make a comeback. While Metro Exodus felt like a conclusion to his story, the Metro universe is rich with potential for new characters and storylines. There’s certainly room to explore beyond Artyom’s journey, and long-time fans of the series would appreciate seeing a familiar face.
In a genre that often prioritizes action over atmosphere, the Metro series stands out for its ability to build tension, dread, and a sense of isolation. With 4A Games at the helm, the next entry in the series will likely continue this tradition.
Will we see it before the year 2033? With any luck, yes. But until then, fans can revisit the tunnels, dust off their grubby gas masks, and keep an eye out for any new details from 4A Games. Just remember, it’ll be ready when it’s ready.
